Common Mistakes

ITIN Application Getting Rejected? Avoid These 5 Common Mistakes

If you need to file US taxes, get a US credit card, or handle US assets, an ITIN is usually required. But many applicants keep getting rejected. Here are the reasons — and the traps to avoid.

1. Errors on the Application Form

Key details on the W-7 form — such as your name and date of birth — must be accurate. If the form is unsigned, or the signature does not meet requirements, it is rejected outright. After filling it in, double- and triple-check every field.

Renewal reminder: if your ITIN has been unused for three years, it must be reactivated. When renewing, write the previous ITIN number on the W-7 and check the "Renew an Existing ITIN" box — otherwise the application gets rejected.

2. Problems with Supporting Documents

Your passport, national ID and other documents must be genuine and valid — not expired, and not blurry or unclear. The IRS also has rules about document types and formats. For example, some documents will not pass review unless the required translation is attached.

3. Failed Identity Verification

Some applicants submit photos that don't meet the requirements, or provide information that cannot prove their identity, so the IRS cannot verify who they are. Note that, per IRS requirements, a legitimate CAA authenticates a taxpayer's identity through a video verification session.

4. Not Qualifying for an ITIN

An ITIN is mainly for non-US residents who do not qualify for an SSN but need to file taxes. If you actually qualify for an SSN, an ITIN application will be rejected.

5. Not Responding to the IRS in Time

During the process, if there is a problem or more materials are needed (usually via a CP566 letter), not responding in time will delay — or directly reject — your application. The moment you hear from the IRS, reply immediately and follow the instructions. Don't put it off.
